Here’s the latest which we attribute to Bariatric Choice: The Hamburger Stroganoff.

Hamburger Stroganoff Recipe:

• 1 Packet of Creamy Alfredo Pasta Mix
• 8 Ounces of Warm Water
• 2 Ounces of Ground Beef, 95% lean
• Tablespoon Cooking Sherry
• Tablespoon Chopped Onion
• Tablespoon Fat-Free Sour Cream

Preparation (9 steps):

1. Saut ground beef and onion until cooked throughly.
2. Drain the fat thoroughly and reserve.
3. Place contents of pasta packet in a medium microwave-safe bowl.
4. Add water and cooking sherry and mix thoroughly.
5. Microwave on HIGH (100%) for 6 minutes. Stir thoroughly halfway through cooking time.
6. Add ground beef mixture and mix.
7. Return to microwave and cook 2 extra minutes or until sauce has thickened.
8. Sauce will continue to thicken upon standing.
9. Add sour cream and serve.

Gastric bands to expand after FDA panel recommendatios?

Scottsdale – It is estimated, in a recent report, that about 12 million more obese Americans could soon qualify for bariatric surgery to implant a small, flexible stomach band designed to help them lose weight by limiting their food intake. The Food and Drug Administration will make a final decision on the Lap-Band in the coming months.

The Lap-Band from Allergan Inc. is currently implanted in about 100,000 people each year and usually helps patients lose 50 pounds. Under federal guidelines, it has been limited to patients who are morbidly obese. On Friday, an FDA panel recommended expanding use of the device to include patients who are less obese. The panel voted 8-2 that the benefits of broader approval outweighed the risks.

Experts stress the stomach band cannot stop deeply ingrained behavior that drives people to overeat. And the cost of the procedure will remain a barrier for many potential patients. The procedure’s costs can range from $14,000 to $20,000. The device itself costs $3,000.

More than a third of all American adults are obese. The gastric band was developed as an alternative to gastric bypass surgery, a permanent procedure in which food is rerouted from a pouch in the stomach to the small intestine. After major weight loss many of these patients may also have to see a plastic surgeon to deal with the excess skin that develops from weight loss. The recommended plastic surgery operations may include a tummy tuck or lower body lift, a thigh lift and breast surgery.

Any new indications approved by the FDA will also affect Ethicon Endo-Surgery’s recently approved  REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band, a surgical implant for weight reduction and improvement in obesity-related health conditions.

The psychology of major weight loss

Scottsdale – Understanding the psychological issues associated with plastic surgery after major weight loss and bariatric surgery is an important step for every patient and plastic surgeon.

Recently, I reviewed an excellent article on the psychological issues associated with major weight loss surgery published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. This is the kind of article that I hand out to all patients in clinic so that they too can learn about these issues.

The article points out that bariatric surgery can provide patients with a positive transformation of health and eating attitudes, but this type of surgery may also have profound lifestyle consequences. It is important to note that while positive psychological outcomes are seen with bariatric surgery, many patients continue to suffer from nutritional deficiencies, psychological battles with food and negative body image.

Negative body image can persist after weight loss. Additionally, many bariatric patients can suffer from depressive disorders, anxiety issues and mood disorders. Women are more likely to suffer from depression and their post-surgery psychological improvement is more significant. Body image dissatisfaction is also more prominent in women and can be associated with a higher incidence of depression, low self-esteem, and perfectionism. While bariatric surgery can improve body image, many patients seek plastic surgery to achieve a better body.

Body contouring surgery, including bodylift, thigh lift, and breast surgery can further improve body image.

Importantly, these psychological improvements with bariatric weight loss and plastic surgery after major weight loss may not be enduring. Additionally, because many bariatric patients have a psychological relationship with food, the weight loss established may not be maintained without consistent psychological and social support. The authors of the article suggest that optimization of psychological treatment and social resources can reduce negative impulses and social stress that revive old habits.
