Halloween Boo….bies!
0Scottsdale – Halloween marks the end of October. Each year, October is also breast cancer awareness month and we want to salute an organization which is in the business of educating young people about the risks of breast cancer.
We, at the AB Guerra Plastic Surgery Center, like The Keep A Breast Foundation™, a non-profit organization in the business of eradicating breast cancer by exposing young people to methods of prevention, early detection and support.
Keep A Breast, uses art events, educational programs and fundraising to increase breast cancer awareness among young people so they are better equipped to make choices and develop habits that will benefit their long-term health.
Hey, if you want to help Keep A Breast in their efforts be sure to go to Amazon.com and buy a I love Boobies Bracelet – 6 pack.
As a board certified plastic surgeon that performs lots of cosmetic breast surgery like breast augmentation and breast lift, I always encourage patients to educate themselves on how to appropriately perform self-breast examinations and mammograms when indicated.
Don't forget the On-Q Pain Pump.
0Pain relief for my breast augmentation in Scottsdale, Arizona patients.
Scottsdale – Pain is a big concern of my patients when undergoing breast augmentation in Scottsdale. There are several techniques to alleviate pain during cosmetic surgery procedures. The On-Q pain relief system is a highly effective means of relieving postoperative pain after breast augmentation.
During your Arizona plastic surgery, a small tube is inserted into the area of surgery. These tubes are attached to a plastic pump filled with medicine which can reduce your pain. The pump allows the numbing medicine to enter the area about a teaspoon per hour for the next several days. Studies demonstrate pain relieving pumps are effective in relieving pain in breast augmentations.
Use of the On-Q Pain Buster allows you to feel less pain with breast reconstruction and tummy tuck cosmetic surgery. It works great with breast implants placed under the muscles. The pain relief system also allows you to take less narcotic pain pills, reducing nausea, constipation, and possible vomiting after aesthetic plastic surgery.
What is Poland's Syndrome?
0Scottsdale – I brought this topic for consideration on the blog, because Poland’s Syndrome is common in the plastic surgeon’s practice. In my office for instance, the condition usually involves women seeking breast augmentation and/or reconstruction.
Poland’s Syndrome is a condition in which there is malformation of the chest causing the pectoralis major, on one side of the body, to be absent or underdeveloped. An underdeveloped breast can accompany the condition. Poland’s is not life threatening, but can make restoration of normal breast shape and symmetry challenging. In Poland’s, one can also see unilateral shortening of the index, long, and ring fingers, and hypoplasia of the hand. Other muscles may be lacking such as the latissimus dorsi and teres major muscles depending on the severity of the condition.
Restoration of a normal appearing breast requires individualized and focused treatment. The hypoplastic breast may require muscular flap and/or silicone gel implant placement, tissue expansion for a future flap and/or implant reconstruction and, in mild cases, implants alone can be use on the affected side. Nipple reconstruction is some times required.
For the best symmetry, I discussed surgery on the non-affected side with all patients. Breast reduction and breast lift with or without silicone breast implants should be used.
Perforator flap breast reconstruction may offer more options for patients.

Fight Breast Cancer.
Scottsdale – An article in the September (2009) issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, suggests that a relatively new technique, using perforator flaps, can offer patients with difficult reconstructive scenarios better results after breast cancer treatment. The article includes an overall experience with almost 4000 breast flaps performed for breast reconstruction. The success rate was 99 percent. The researchers concluded that perforator flap breast reconstruction is an accepted surgical option for breast cancer patients electing to restore their body image after mastectomy.
A “perforator flap” is quite different from traditional tissue flaps used in plastic surgery. Previously, tissue flaps would depend on oxygen and nutrition derived via the blood vessels in muscles and fascias, called musculocutaneous or fasciocutaneous flaps. While use of these techniques is important, transfer of the tissue would inevitably removed the underlying muscle or fascia from the donor region for good. The perforator tissue flaps only use the blood vessels that penetrate muscle and fascia and supply oxygen and nutrition to the skin and fat tissue being harvested. Perforator flaps allow the reconstructive surgeon to provide tissue while preserving underlying muscular structures, such as the rectus muscles of the abdominal wall, seen with dissection of the Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator flap. The muscle can left intact, while the tissue for breast reconstruction, the skin and fat, is transferred to reconstruct the breast.
With the introduction of the deep inferior epigastric perforator flap, microsurgical techniques have evolved to support a 99 percent success rate for a variety of flaps with donor sites that include the abdomen, buttock, thigh, and trunk. With this experience, the authors are tackling more difficult cases and scenarios. They concluded that the current trends for the use of perforator flaps suggest an application of these techniques in patients previously felt to be unacceptable surgical candidates with a focus on safety, aesthetics, and increased sensitization. Moreover, recent experience highlights the use of perforator flaps as a proven solution for patients who have experienced failed breast implant-based reconstructions or those requiring irradiation in the treatment of breast carcinoma.
Aldo Benjamin Guerra, MD of Scottsdale, AZ and Colleagues Receive Prestigious Award for Landmark Paper on Breast Reconstruction
0SCOTTSDALE, AZ – MAY 9, 2005 – Local Scottsdale plastic surgeon, Aldo Benjamin Guerra, MD and colleagues received the prestigious James Barrett Brown Award today at the 84th annual meeting of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons in Scottsdale, Arizona. The award was officially presented by James May, MD to Dr. Paul Gill, one of Dr. Guerra’s co-authors on the article entitled “A 10 year retrospective review of 758 DIEP flaps for breast reconstruction”. The article originally appeared in the international Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery® in April 2004.
The James Barrett Brown Award was established in memory of James Barrett Brown, M.D., a past president of the Association, and is presented annually for the best plastic surgery related paper published during the previous calendar year. Members of the Association make the selection from articles published in the United States. At the opening ceremonies of the Annual Meeting, the recipient summarizes the clinical or basic science research of the award-winning paper.
“The DIEP flap is State-of-the-Art in breast reconstruction, I am glad to see that Association’s recognition of this wonderful work,” said Dr. Aldo Guerra, medical director of AB Guerra Plastic Surgery, Scottsdale, AZ.
Dr. Paul Gill presented a summary of the study’s findings for the members of the Association after receiving the award. Dr. Aldo Guerra and several of his co-authors were in attendance at the meeting. DIEP flaps are derived from abdominal tissue and serve as an ideal substitute for a woman’s breast after mastectomy. DIEP flaps allow for the maximal preservation of the abdominal muscles. This technique allows many patients to have a faster recovery and to experience less pain than patients treated with muscle-based flaps.
“Breast reconstruction surgery has come a long way over the last few decades. In the past, breast cancer survivors had few options after mastectomy. DIEP flaps are noteworthy for restoration of the breast in women suffering from breast cancer,” said Dr. Aldo Guerra.
