Scottsdale Mommy Makeover Seminar Tonight!
0Today is the Mommy Makeover Seminar in Scottsdale!
Dr. Guerra will be presenting the Scottsdale Mommy Makeover seminar tonight 3/2/2011 in North Scottsdale. We look forward to meeting the attendees. In previous plastic surgery seminars there have been some great questions asked and Dr. Guerra was able to answer them in a group environment.
We are also very proud to introduce Nancy Wakely from the Lymphatic Healing Center who will discuss the benefits of lymphatic massages to help patients heal better and faster for optimum recovery. We have been referring our patients to the Lymphatic Healing Center for a few years now and patients really enjoy the lymphatic massage treatments for some of the immediate effects and for help with long term healing.
And finally, Jason Liakos from Mentor will be in attendance to discuss the benefits of the Memory Gel breast implants and answer any questions. Patients enjoy learning about the saline breast implants and the silicone breast implants options in Arizona so it’s an honor to have an official representative from Mentor in attendance.

Sunscreen Rankings for the Summer.
0Scottsdale -With Memorial Day just pass us, we are realizing that summer is really here! In Arizona, we know the heat and the sun is coming back to full force. To protect your skin this summer I did a little research on which sunscreen might be best. Fortunately, Consumer Reports has ranked sunscreen for us and here is a summary:
The 4 top ranked — all sprays — are Up & Up Sport Continuous (Target); Walgreens Sport Continuous; Banana Boat Sport Performance Continuous and Aveeno Continuous Protection. All four tied in their overall score. Consumer Reports ranked those with the same scores by cost per ounce and emphasizes that “sunscreens that guard against ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B radiation can help prevent sunburn, wrinkles, and certain skin cancers.”
For the actual tests, CR looked at “how well each product blocked UVA and UVB rays and how well their claimed sun-protection factor, or SPF — a measure of UVB protection — lasted on volunteers who soaked in water for 40 or 80 minutes.” The top four sunscreens each “provided very good UVA protection and excellent UVB protection, and met their SPF claim even after treated skin was in water for 80 minutes,” CR said.
Sunscreen is an important aspect of all summer vacations and we recommend anyone of the top 4 sunscreen outlined above.
Top 5 Cosmetic Surgeries in Women.
0Scottsdale – For those who want to know about the most popular procedures for women and men, we have compiled this data on our blog. The data originates from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Inc. This is the data for the latest completed year, 2009.
It is not surprising to see that breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure among women in 2009. Members of the Aesthetic Society performed 311,957 breast augmentations in 2009. Liposuction was the second most popular procedure among women, with 243,217 lipo procedures performed last year.
The next three most popular cosmetic surgery procedures rounding up the top 5 lists: 3rd, blepharoplasty or cosmetic eyelid surgery, 4th, abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery, and 5th place is breast reduction surgery.
The number of eyelid lifts performed in 2009 was 124,939 barely outpacing tummy tuck which was 123,041. The data does not tell us whether lipo was performed in combination with tummy tuck or on its own.
I noticed that rhinoplasty was not in the top 5 procedures among women, and that was a bit of a surprise for me. Overall, 105,597 nose reshaping procedures were performed on noses. The number of women having cosmetic surgery far outpaces men.
Other numbers, not in the top 5, that I found interesting were those in relation to plastic surgery after major weight loss. These included the lower body lift, which resulted in 6,496 cases performed in 2009. There were 11,222 thigh lifts performed and 15,778 arm lifts performed in 2009. The buttock lift was performed 2,797 times by ASAPS surgeons in 2009, while buttock augmentation was performed 4,726 times in the data compiled.
Body Image in the Brain: Some women respond differently.
0Phoenix – A recent report featured at LIveScience and from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah suggests that even well-adjusted women who have a normal perception of body image have brain scans that reveal they are concerned about getting fat.
In the study, 10 normal weight women and nine normal weight men between the ages of 18 and 30 were examined. Both groups were shown images of people with different body shapes (either fat or thin) that matched the subjects gender.
With each image, the study subject was asked to “imagine someone is saying your body looks like hers/his”.
This all occurred while the subjects had their brains scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results demonstrate that when women looked at images of overweight individuals, their brain scans showed a spike in activity in a region thought to be involved in self-reflection and evaluation of self-worth, the medial prefrontal cortex.
Anorexic and bulimic women also show increased activity in this region when they look at images of overweight persons, but their brain activity is more pronounced. The same spike in brain activity was not found when women pictured themselves as thin.
Men showed no change in activity in this brain area regardless of whether they pictured themselves as fat or thin, suggesting they do not experience the same self-reflection as women. Interestingly, previous work by Allen and his colleagues has shown that male body builders have brain activity patterns similar to bulimic women.
The investigators believe the contrasting results between the sexes is likely due to the social pressures on women to be thin in society, and not due to a biological difference.
“Even though they claim they don’t care about body issues…their brains are showing that it really bugs them to think about the prospect of being overweight,” said study researcher Mark Allen, a neuroscientist at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
The current study cannot distinguish whether the spike in brain activity was due to negative feelings about being overweight, or simply the fact that these normal-weight women needed to picture themselves in a different way when they were asked to imagine themselves as fat. In other words, researchers might see the same spike in brain activity when overweight women look at images of thin women, because picturing themselves as thin requires that they alter their self-image.
The results will be published in the May issue of the journal Personality and Individual Differences.
D is what you need for better immunity.
0Scottsdale – New breakthrough research shows how Vitamin D works to activate the immune system and we should all pay close attention. When infection-fighting T cells fail to find vitamin D, they do nothing. Scientists now understand how important vitamin D is for immunity (Source: Thompson Reuters).
T-cells that are part of your body’s defense system against autoimmune diseases, infection, viruses and perhaps other chronic illnesses need vitamin D to become activated. Without vitamin D the immune system remains inactive.
A group of Danish scientists found the crucial link between vitamin D and immunity. T-cells look for foreign invaders. When the infection fighters find bacteria or other foreign substances in the body they send out a signal from vitamin D receptors that the researchers say act like an “antenna”.
Professor Carsten Geisler from the Department of International Health, Immunology and Microbiology explains, “If the T cells cannot find enough vitamin D in the blood, they won’t even begin to mobilize.”
Exposure to sunlight naturally activates vitamin D in the body, but fears of skin cancer, time spent indoors working, and inadequate dietary intake of vitamin D is implicated for deficiency of the vitamin in a large portion of the population. Fatty fish contain vitamin D. Many consumers shun eating too much fish out of fears of contamination. Salmon is a good source of vitamin D but most is farm raised.
The only natural way to get vitamin D is from sunshine. Keeping our immune systems healthy becomes no easy task. The only other solution is consuming food products fortified with vitamin D or by taking vitamin D supplements, but no one has established a minimum daily requirement for optimal health. Vitamin D deficiency has become a global problem and implicated in a variety of diseases.
