Lipo or Liposuction in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Lipo or liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that leads to the permanent removal of fat tissue using a suction technique. Liposuction can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. Many people are unhappy about the fat they have in different parts of their body, and for that reason, liposuction is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the United States. Learn more about liposuction in Arizona.

Scottsdale – Liposuction is one of the most common plastic surgery operations performed. Liposuction typically leads to the permanent removal of fat containing cells from the body using a suction technique.

Why choose Liposuction?

Many people are unhappy about fat accumulated in different parts of their body. For that reason, liposuction has been the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the U. S. over the years. When liposuction first started it was nothing more than a technique to remove unwanted fat pockets. Several advancements have made liposuction safer and better. Modern techniques of liposuction can remove the unwanted fat, but also allow for sculpting of the body into a better shape. These modern advancements are important, but the experience of the surgeon is usually considered more important to achieving a good result with lipo than any other factor.

Lipo Advancements used in our Scottsdale Practice.

Some of the advancements used in our practice include tumescent liposuction technique for safer anesthesia, micro-cannula liposuction for a smoother contour, ultrasound lipo and laser liposuction to gently remove stubborn fat pockets, and lymphatic massage which allows the body to recuperate faster. The most popular areas for liposuction include the abdomen, hips, back, thighs, knees, upper arms, buttocks, cheeks and neck. This procedure is very popular because the recovery time is typically short, there is minimal pain and only tiny incisions. Keep in mind, that when more areas are treated with liposuction, the longer the recovery. When more fat volume is removed, more swelling and bruising is seen after surgery. Recovery for most patients is usually less than 2 weeks.

On the Safety of Liposuction.

Liposuction is safe when performed in a certified plastic surgery center with appropriate anesthesia personnel. Liposuction is not a weight loss method because there are limitations as to how much fat can be removed at one time. We recommend patients be as close as possible to their ideal body weight before having plastic surgery. A good diet and exercise regiment helps to keep you in shape before and after surgery. We recommend you consult with an experienced board certified plastic surgeon for your lipo procedure. Our philosophy includes the belief that better liposuction always occurs when logical steps are used by the cosmetic surgeon to improve the outcome while minimizing the potential risks. Patients, of course, play a major role in deciding how much volume and where the procedure should be carried out.

Scottsdale, AZ – Many patients with major weight loss request body contouring to improve the shape of their body. The most accepted procedure for contouring in these patients is the body lift. However, many patients shy away from body lift because they believe the procedure is too aggressive, carries higher risk, and is too expensive. Other options exist that patients should know about.

The extended abdominoplasty or tummy tuck procedure is one alternative that we are discussing on the blog. Traditionally, this procedure has been performed as an inpatient, hospital-based procedure that can be associated with higher expenses. A recent medical article published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, discusses extended tummy tuck safely performed as an outpatient. The authors began performing outpatient extended tummy tuck in 2004. A total of 19 patients were included in the study, with an average age of 43 years, and an average weight loss of 142 pounds.

All the patients had successful surgery. No blood transfusion was required with an average blood loss of 130 ml. All patients went home the same day, with a pain pump and prescriptions to control their discomfort. The rate of complications was 26%, with superficial wound separation being the most common complication. Other complications included were infection, bleeding, umbilical necrosis and seroma formation. One patient required seroma sclerosis. No patient required re-admission to the hospital.

This is an important article because it is the first study to address extended abdominoplasty in major weight loss patients performed strictly as an outpatient. The article demonstrates the safety and efficacy of the technique. The complication rate is acceptable and we see that most complications were relatively minor and responded quickly to treatment. This experience supports that extended tummy tuck in patients with major weight loss can be performed safely as an outpatient. The authors emphasize that a high degree of patient education is required to minimize complications and increase the success rate.

I advise patients undergoing extended abdominoplasty to walk immediately after surgery and several times on the first day to reduce the risks of deep vein thrombosis. I have been using extended tummy tuck in major weight loss patients since 2003 and prefer to have patients stay in the facility for 23 hours, which is considered outpatient surgery. The surgery is safe, but requires a lot of work from the patient to ensure they are doing all they can to heal as best as possible.

Scottsdale – I have combined abdominoplasty and liposuction since I began my own clinical practice in 2002. I have found the combination of these techniques to be safe and effective in producing better results when compared to the tummy tuck without liposuction.

There are several advantages of the combined techniques, including, a reduction in the fat volume in the love handles and upper tummy. This translates into a smaller waistline and a tighter, flatter tummy. I have noticed that many patients benefit by having shorter scars when the tissue over the hips is removed with lipo as supposed to extending the incision farther.

A study published in the Annals of Plastic Surgery, has confirmed that a shorter scar can be seen after tummy tuck when using liposuction in the love handles with a tummy tuck. The study measurements were made with a 3-dimensional laser surface scanner which more objectively measures the outcome of the surgery and the scar length. The study also demonstrated that liposuction did not increase the number of complications with the tummy tuck procedure. Other studies have confirmed this finding.

Patients should be offered the opportunity to have liposuction when pursuing a tummy tuck. I always discuss the pros and cons and the potential complications that come along with adding this additional procedure. However, most healthy individuals can the have the procedure without increasing the risks of complications as previous studies have confirmed.

SCOTTSDALE – The media reviews and claims keep coming on laser lipolysis – aka liposuction assisted by a laser device. For the most part, the systems are touted as being “less invasive” and leading to a “faster” recovery. Up to this point , however, no medical group has published any randomized comparison study comparing laser lipolysis with other modalities. A recent review at the surgical center which I utilize demonstrated that laser lipolysis procedures require longer operative times than traditional liposuction techniques. Additionally, the laser techniques are destructive. The manufacturer of these devices claim that the wavelength preferentially attacks fat cells, but skin burns are commonly reported after these procedures. A recent review of laser-assisted liposuction,in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, reported a low complication rate of less than one percent. However, burns accounted for 80% of those complications. The authors did not consider the need for additional or “touch up” procedures a complication. According to the authors, an additional 3.5% of patients required some sort of additional procedure after the initial laser lypolysis.

In general, I caution patients about new technologies such as laser lipolysis. Before undergoing such a procedure, I recommend that patients become well informed with all the potential risks and complications. Burn of the skin is generally not a complication of traditional liposuction surgery, but can be associated with ultrasound assisted and other modalities which heat up the tissues. I prefer a more traditional approach to liposuction, but will occasionally offer ultrasound liposuction to some patients. Currently, I have no plans to obtain a laser system for liposuction. The rate of satisfaction using the more traditional techniques in my practice have been extremely high over the past 7 years.
