Lipo or liposuction in Arizona or Mexico?

Scottsdale – Recently a plastic surgery in Arizona patient and I had a conversation about liposuction in Mexico. This particular individual wanted lipo of the love handles and hips to achieve an hourglass appearance. She told me that in Mexico, “they are leaving them very thin after liposuction”.

Our patient was looking for a similar result. I explained that I often see patients who had liposuction in Mexico and other cosmetic surgery procedures as well. It is true that liposuction is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure south of the border. I would caution patients about traveling for any plastic surgery procedure, however.

Revision liposuction in Arizona.

For liposuction, in particular, I have been asked to revise several patients over the past few years who had liposuction in Mexico. In most cases, the liposuction performed was very aggressive, in the deep fat layer, and the superficial fat layer as well.

Overly-aggressive lipo in both fat planes is associated with moderate to severe contour deformity. While the patients may indeed look thinner (in their clothes), a close inspection of their figure, often times, identifies small and deep craters due to the removal of a normal fat layer.

The treatment for this issue is fat grafting. In some cases, the deformity is so severe that multiple operations may be required to obtain enough viable fat and create a smooth surface once again. Fat transfer or fat injection is the most reliable method to correct these crates and dimples.

On the other hand, using sound technique and avoiding an over aggressive approach has great dividends for both patient and plastic surgeon. I advise patients to consider carefully the risks of lipo and consult with a board certified plastic surgeon before proceeding with major plastic surgery of the body.
