Breast reduction linked to lower risk of back problems.

0

Scottsdale – Women who have very large breasts often times complain of upper back and neck pain. They seek breast reduction surgery in hopes of having less pain in those areas of the spine. They also want to be able to work and perform their daily functions without being so uncomfortable. According to new research presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) 78th Annual Conference,  women who have breast reduction surgery may be at a lower risk for spine and other back disorders.

This study is rather simple, but also effective at demonstrating that breast reduction improves the function of those having surgery. In the research, participants were asked to perform a bio-mechanical analysis with the use of tasks that involved lifting a 5 pound weight both before and after surgery. The patients were asked to respond via a questionnaire. The results demonstrate that women who had breast reduction experienced decreased stress in their lower back while performing the physical activities. The participants also reported dramatic improvements in the ability to perform dynamic movements and withstand static positions.

Excessively large breasts are considered an unhealthy condition resulting in significant shoulder and back pain, and deep shoulder grooves from bra straps. This study is another piece of evidence to show that breast reduction is an effective surgery that can relieve back pain and increase the functional use of the back. According to ASPS, nearly 89,000 breast reductions were performed in 2008, up 5 percent since 2000.

Is all fat grafting the same?

Fat cells take better when they are closer to oxygen and nutrient supplies.

Fat cells take better when they are closer to oxygen and nutrient supply.

Scottsdale – Is all fat grafting the same? No. The simple answer is that not all fat grafting techniques are the same. There are many variations. Some surgeons place large volumes per injection. Others place medium-sized volumes, and yet other surgeons may use micro-volume techniques for their procedures. I use a  a micro-volume technique and place tiny amounts of fat per injection. This allows for the most predictable and improved long-term results.

This micro technique allows for the fat cells to have better “take” and to establish a better oxygen and nutrient supply. The closer the injected fat cells are to a nutrient source, the better the chances these fat cells will survive the transfer from one part of the body to another. Our technique is gentle and optimizes the outcome of fat grafting for facial rejuvenation, buttock augmentation and post-liposuction correction.

At the AB Guerra Plastic Surgery Center, we use a sophisticated system to harvest and graft the fat cells using a method that works extremely well and reduces the risk of fat reabsorption.

Fat grafting can be safely combined with traditional techniques to enhance your appearance after face lift. Fat grafting can also be used alone, in some cases, and can deliver very good results in rejuvenation of the face for reduction of the laugh lines, augmentation of the cheeks and chin, and general filling of any “hollowed” areas.
