Scottsdale – Composite Body Contouring is a relatively new topic in plastic surgery. So, what is it?
A composite body contouring procedure is a combination plastic surgery operation. The Composite includes a tummy tuck, liposuction of the body, and fat injections to the buttocks. In many cases, the liposuction can be circumferential and may include lipo of the upper and lower back, love handles and extremities.
A special technique is used to perform the tummy tuck which preserves the oxygen supply to the skin and can reduce the risks of wound healing complications. Restoration of buttock contour with fat transfer can be used to give patients a better shape to the buttocks. The outer thighs are another popular location for fat grafting.
It is very important to provide the greatest amount of safety for our patients when performing Composite Body Contouring and the key to perform this cosmetic surgery operation only in a surgical facility that can admit patients for recovery and observation for at least 24 hours after surgery. I use a specialty surgery hospital that is specifically designed to meet the needs of cosmetic plastic surgery patients.
Also known as, “the composite”, this operation is a variation of the “mommy makeover” concept of combining multiple procedures to reverse the changes associated with pregnancy. Published studies demonstrate that the combination of cosmetic breast surgery and tummy tuck is safe when performed in an appropriate environment by qualified physicians. That combination of surgery is the classic “mommy makeover” duo I have performed since 2003.
On the other hand, “the composite” typically excludes breast surgery, but targets different areas that can affect women either post-pregnancy or with weight gain or loss, including the tummy, back, thighs and buttocks. Before and after photos can be found on our main website.

Midline rift: making you look fit after tummy tuck.
Jan 20th
Scottsdale – Having a healthy looking tummy after tummy tuck is an important aspect of the surgical technique used in my practice. One of the mainstays of the healthy tummy is the midline rift. The midline rift is the natural shallow depression that occurs in the center of the body.
The midline depression can be achieved with tummy tuck surgery. The surgically created midline depression makes it look like the patient works out after surgery. The depression is created with liposuction. The belly button incision is used to place a lipo cannula to remove just the right amount of unwanted fat from the area. Once the rift is created, the belly button incision is closed.
The midline rift is a bonus for the patient. Any patient that requests this additional procedure can have it as part of their tummy tuck surgery. However, not everyone is a good candidate for this additional procedure. A consultation with me at our Scottsdale, Arizona office can provide you with more information. I will advise you if you are a good candidate for midline rift creation surgery (model used in illustration).

Scottsdale mommy makeovers: It’s in the details!
Dec 17th
Scottsdale – The reason mommy makeovers are popular is that many women are having children. We all know the changes. The body of a woman who has been through pregnancy is never truly the same. The usual problem areas are: the breasts, the tummy, the buttocks and the fat pockets. Many women cannot recognize themselves and others feel like their body no longer belongs to them.
There is no doubt that having a child is one of the most fulfilling experiences a woman can have. Some women, however, feel self-conscious about the effects of pregnancy. Pregnancy takes its toll on a mother’s body. Stretching of the stomach muscles and tummy skin is normal with pregnancy. The breasts are usually affected by increasing elasticity and softness. The hips, back and thighs may accumulate fat that may not go away completely after pregnancy. The buttocks, may soften up too, become flatter and less round and begin to sag.
A mommy makeover is a comprehensive set of procedures used to treat all the areas which change during pregnancy. There are 4 major variations of the mommy makeover we offer to our patients at the AB Guerra Plastic Surgery Center. We recommend that patients prioritize the areas important to them, so we can appropriately discuss your interests and create a reasonable treatment plan that addresses your needs.
A Scottsdale mommy makeover is performed in one stage and consists of a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), and a breast enhancement with implants (breast augmentation) or implants and breast lift (mastopexy). A mommy makeover can also include a tummy tuck with a breast reduction. The last option for mommy makeover includes a tummy tuck with liposuction and buttock enhancement, usually via fat grafting of the buttocks.
Each Scottsdale mommy makeover performed at the AB Guerra Plastic Surgery Center is unique and is tailored to your individual needs.
Plastic Surgery after Major Weight Loss: The Extended Abdominoplasty.
Nov 5th

Plastic Surgery after Weight Loss.
Scottsdale, AZ – Many patients with major weight loss request body contouring to improve the shape of their body. The most accepted procedure for contouring in these patients is the body lift. However, many patients shy away from body lift because they believe the procedure is too aggressive, carries higher risk, and is too expensive. Other options exist that patients should know about.
The extended abdominoplasty or tummy tuck procedure is one alternative that we are discussing on the blog. Traditionally, this procedure has been performed as an inpatient, hospital-based procedure that can be associated with higher expenses. A recent medical article published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, discusses extended tummy tuck safely performed as an outpatient. The authors began performing outpatient extended tummy tuck in 2004. A total of 19 patients were included in the study, with an average age of 43 years, and an average weight loss of 142 pounds.
All the patients had successful surgery. No blood transfusion was required with an average blood loss of 130 ml. All patients went home the same day, with a pain pump and prescriptions to control their discomfort. The rate of complications was 26%, with superficial wound separation being the most common complication. Other complications included were infection, bleeding, umbilical necrosis and seroma formation. One patient required seroma sclerosis. No patient required re-admission to the hospital.
This is an important article because it is the first study to address extended abdominoplasty in major weight loss patients performed strictly as an outpatient. The article demonstrates the safety and efficacy of the technique. The complication rate is acceptable and we see that most complications were relatively minor and responded quickly to treatment. This experience supports that extended tummy tuck in patients with major weight loss can be performed safely as an outpatient. The authors emphasize that a high degree of patient education is required to minimize complications and increase the success rate.
I advise patients undergoing extended abdominoplasty to walk immediately after surgery and several times on the first day to reduce the risks of deep vein thrombosis. I have been using extended tummy tuck in major weight loss patients since 2003 and prefer to have patients stay in the facility for 23 hours, which is considered outpatient surgery. The surgery is safe, but requires a lot of work from the patient to ensure they are doing all they can to heal as best as possible.
